Home a Flash Fiction

Struggling week by week, it was all that they could do to hang onto their home of twenty years. All the memories of this place, their children growing up here, their first home, soon to be on the market in order to recoup any equity that they had left in the house they called home.

Sad but yet excited to start a new chapter in their lives. Moving would be hard, downsizing even harder but it had to be done.

Home would be as always with each other. Home is where the heart is, home is where love grows.

This flash fiction story of 99 words is for this weeks compilation over at Carrot Ranch. Stop by the ranch if you enjoy writing or reading flash fiction. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Spring Beauty

I tend to my flowering bush carefully raking away the autumn leaves that have been protecting it all winter. Each day I check for the long awaited buds to emerge and pop. Year after year the flowers seem more breathtaking in their pink, white, yellow and red hues.  New life is here.  The bush itself stands tall and grows wider each year that passes with warmth from the sun. The leaves start out green and erupt into a beautiful shade of red in the fall. Once in its full foliage I know that spring has left and summer begins.

“Jess, roll up your window and make sure that your door is locked. Look straight ahead and don't look at anyone on the streets.”

“Why Dad, are we being followed or something?”

“Just do as I say, we're driving through a bad neighborhood.”

“But Dad, this is California, everyone is so nice here, how bad can it be?”

“This is Watts, and here if the whites go into the blacks neighborhood there could be lots of trouble, so just look straight ahead, we'll be out of here soon.”

“Seriously, that sounds ridiculous but I'll do as you ask Dad.”

Never Give In - Flash Fiction

On the drive to the Doctor’s appointment my blood pressure must have been sky high.  I looked over at Al and said, “My cousin Sandy was diagnosed at the about the same age as I am right now and well … You know. “

“Stop worrying, it’s probably not that bad. But if it’s cancer they'll be able to operate. Come on you beat it twice before and you can do it again.”

The doctor walked in, introduced himself, shook our hands and said, “You have inoperable stage IV lung cancer in both lungs.”

No I’m gonna fight this.

My submission for this week is part of what I’ve been living with for almost the past two years. If you'd like to read about my ongoing journey it can be found on HubPages titled, My Battles with Breast and Lung Cancer.

Addicted - Flash Fiction

Gotta go see Dave … Hell, he'll hook me up; I'm only twenty short.

Where did I put my damn phone?  Ah there it is.

Shaking I dialed, the sweat dripping down my face.

Hey Dave, John here, can you meet me in ten minutes at our spot?

Sure bro, want your regular?

Ya man.

Shit Dave’s not here, now what do I do.

Pacing back and forth I spotted him.

I thought for a minute you weren't gonna show. I’m twenty short, can you cover me?

Uhhh …. Sure, no problem.

Later, man found dead from overdose.

After writing this first flash for this week I wanted to write a second one.
Here it is.

I walked into the room and saw grandma hunched over sitting on her bed staring at the floor.

Grandma, what’s wrong? Are you feeling okay?

After a big sigh she looked up at me with tears in her eyes and replied, I’m just thinking of your mother and how so much I miss her dear.  It’s not fair that she was taken from us so young. For you to grow up without her is a tragedy.

Sitting down on the bed to comfort grandma she continued. They take the good ones way too soon, way too soon. More tears.

The Bully and Quick Thinking

When I was in grade 9, I was good friends with a new girl that had moved into the neighborhood. We hung together all the time and were pretty much inseparable. We attended the same school and lived a street over from each other.

After a few months Debbie started hanging out with this other group of girls that to me seemed like a bunch of trouble. When I refused to hang out with them Debbie became quite angry with me. She kept trying to start fights with me and threatened me constantly.

Debbie ended up in quite a lot of trouble after what happened in my true flash fiction for this week.

Terrified to answer the door, I thought it might be Deb waiting to harass me. When I didn't answer, she started calling, I know you're in there; I just want to talk to you.

Maybe she’d had a change of heart, her voice sounded friendly.  Reluctantly I let her in. What came next had me perspiring.

Following me into the kitchen she told me she had her mother’s gun on her and planned to use it on me.

Go ahead, My Dad just pulled into the driveway. Quickly out the back door she fled.

Dad was still at work.

Turquoise Eyes - Flash Fiction

The night was still young but Meghan had had a long day and her entire body ached from exhaustion. She would finish her beer and go straight home to bed as tomorrow was going to be another demanding day at the office.

Chin in hand staring across the bar she noticed the most beautiful turquoise eyes staring back at her.  She started to blush and straightened up on her bar stool as she thought to herself, I must meet this man that is checking me out.

Now wide awake, Meghan ordered another beer with thoughts of home totally gone.

Compassionate Neighbours - Flash Fiction

Easter was approaching and there was barely enough food to feed the family of six let alone get the children any chocolate eggs or bunnies.

Stop worrying Agnes, surely some work will turn up soon, said Roy.

Normally he was right but Agnes felt deep in her heart that this year there'd be no ham on their table for dinner.

It was Good Friday and Agnes heard a knock at the door. No one was there but there was a fairly large box sitting on the porch. It was filled with food, chocolate, and a ham.

Agnes’ heart melted.

For The Love of Garlic

Mommy, do we really have to go and visit Aunt Annie again tonight?

Why dear, do you not like your Aunt?

I like her, it’s just that she smells kind of funny.

Her job is handling tobacco all day long making cigarettes dear, so that’s probably why you think she smells funny.

No it’s not that kind of a smell. Daddy smells like cigarettes but she has a different smell to her.

Mommy thought hard about it. Of course, now I know what you’re referring to. Your aunt comes home every Friday night and makes herself a garlic sandwich.

This is a post for a Flash Fiction Challenge over at Carrot Ranch. If you or someone you know likes to read or write flash fiction please stop by and join in on the fun and many challenges.
