Homemade Dog Treats

Homemade Healthy Dog Cookies

The following recipe is a healthy homemade dog cookie.

Does your dog have food allergies? These days so many dogs do including mine. I discovered that Maggie and Bruce have a bad reaction when they eat a commercial dog food that includes any type of corn. At first I thought that they had fleas as they were scratching and biting constantly all over themselves. After checking and not finding any fleas or flea eggs I thought about their diet, and looked into food allergies. It took 2 1/2 months after changing them over to a grain free dog kibble to determine that it was in fact a food allergy. I'm not 100% sure that it is only the corn that they're allergic to as the food that I now feed them is wheat free as well.

I started making homemade dog cookies around Christmastime this year as a special treat for them. They enjoyed them so much that I've continued to make them and have since changed the recipe up slightly. I even did a test with them. I held out a Milk-bone cookie in one hand and the homemade cookie in the other hand. Both dogs sniffed each cookie and chose the homemade cookie.

Onto the recipe .......

Ingredients
  • 1 cup of mashed bananas
  • 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 1/2 cups of brown rice flour
  • 1/4 cup of flax seed meal
  • 1/2 cup of oatmeal

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F
  2. Either line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease the baking sheet.
  3. In a medium size bowl combine the mashed bananas with the smooth peanut butter and honey. Mix and beat really well to a smooth consistency.
  4. In a smaller bowl combine and mix together the brown rice flour along with the flax seed meal and oatmeal.
  5. Add this to the medium bowl and mix everything really well.
  6. On a floured surface roll out the dough and cut into cookie shapes.
  7. Place onto the baking sheet and on the middle rack in the oven.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave the cookie in the oven to harden. I leave mine to harden in the oven for several hours.
  9. If your dog likes a softer cookie remove from the oven as soon as they're cooked.
.
If your dog is not allergic to wheat I have a dog cookie recipe that is very similar to this one that can be found on HubPages at this link

I do hope that your dog enjoys these cookies as much as mine do. Thanks for visiting and have a great day!
Patiently waiting for the cookies to come out
of the oven.

  1. I love the "test" you did with your dogs. I'm pretty sure my beagle would choose the homemade treats too, especially because they have peanut butter as an ingredient. I'm curious, how long can these dog biscuits be stored?

  2. Kristin, They can be stored at room temperature for I'd say about three days. In the fridge for 3 weeks or frozen for up to 4 months I think. I gave some to my sons girlfriend for her dog and she loved them too.
Hope that your dog enjoys them as much as mine do.
