Dog Birthday Cake Recipe

Today my Newfoundland dog "Bruce" turned six years old. I'll be the first to admit that both of my dogs are spoiled. Not only do they get cakes baked for them on their birthdays, homemade dog cookies baked bi-weekly, but then there's the liver, heart, and chicken gizzards that I cook up for them at least once a week for their breakfasts. Some people may think that this is ridiculous but hey they're part of my family and they enjoy the extra special treats just as much as I enjoy making them.

Carrot Apple Peanut Butter Cake

Ingredients                                               Prep Time:        15 minutes

  • 1 large carrot                                     Cooking Time:  28 minutes
  • 1 medium size apple
  • 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter          Total Time:       43 minutes
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup of brown rice flour
  • 1/4 cup of flax meal
  • 1 Tsp. of baking soda
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Spray a small baking pan (I used a square 7" X 7" pan) with cooking spray
  3. Clean and grind the carrot in a food processor so that it yields a cup of ground carrot.
  4. Cut the apple in pieces removing the core. Grind the apple in the food processor.
  5. In a medium size bowl add the ground carrot and apple.
  6. Next add and mix in the peanut butter, vegetable oil and two eggs.
  7. Add the dry ingredients; brown rice flour, flax meal and baking soda.
  8. Beat and mix everything really well together.
  9. Pour the mixture into the baking pan. The mixture will be on the thicker side so you may want to use a spatula to smooth it out.
  10. Pop it into the oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool on a rack completely before removing from the pan.
  12. Any decorating you choose to do can be done at this time. I left the cake as it was as I'm not much of a cake decorator, and felt that the cake will probably be good just as it is.
Here's Bruce

Update: For my female Newfoundland dog Maggie Magz, on her birthday I baked a Peanut Butter Carob Banana Cake. Follow the link for the recipe.

  1. That is adorable! I'd make my dogs a cake for their birthdays! I make Pedro Oatmeal or Scrambled Eggs for breakfast and the dogs get lots of treats. I had to cut Peanut off for a while he was looking like a big overstuffed sausage.

  2. Kelly, Al and the boys thought I was nuts because I even had a piece of Bruce's birthday cake. It wasn't too bad :) I've had to cut back on Maggie's food and treats as she's getting pretty wide in the derriere :)

  4. Bruce is adorable and the fact that you make him a cake and home made treats is so cool. I also cook for my dogs. They love chicken livers mixed in with their dry food (no grain). Cookie has been on a Vet recommended green bean diet forever to keep her weight down. Tony is young and active so he stays slim.

  5. Cyndi, Sometimes I think I spoil the dogs way more than I ever did my boys :)

Peg, Mine are on a grain free kibble as well. The green bean diet sounds interesting. I'll have to ask my vet about that one.
